August DeMarea’s work marries illustration and design practices to create expressive compositions grounded in story telling and playful designs. Rooted in print-based media with illustration as a foundational point, their practice spans across digital and traditional processes, using each as a tool for exploration and extending imagery beyond its natural form.
His work centers on storytelling through abstraction, drawing inspiration from folklore, pop culture, and queer perspective. Stylized graphic language and exaggerated forms reflect an ongoing interest in the connections among figures, environments, and symbolic dreamlike imagery.
DeMarea has previously been informed by the American West, its landscape, and the unique symbolism of America’s mythos, along with the dreaminess of American landscapes and the cowboy. These references are reinterpreted with a sense of play, examining cultural narratives of visual trends associated with the American West. He revisits historical styles and reframes them with contemporary contexts.
Committed to experimentation, DeMarea explores multiple avenues for sharing their illustrious style and narratives through collaborative projects and merchandise developed through their work as an Art Director. Curiosity and play are key to their process, driving an ongoing investigation of form, storytelling, and visual language.
